<p>Bukti ilmiah</p>
<p>Pada tahun 1939, geolog Belanda Van Bemmelen melaporkan, Danau Toba, yang panjangnya 100 kilometer dan lebarnya 30 kilometer, dikelilingi oleh batu apung peninggalan dari letusan gunung. Karena itu, Van Bemmelen menyimpulkan, Toba adalah sebuah gunung berapi. Belakangan, beberapa peneliti lain menemukan debu riolit (rhyolite) yang seusia dengan batuan Toba di Malaysia, bahkan juga sejauh 3.000 kilometer ke utara hingga India Tengah.</p>
<p>Beberapa ahli kelautan pun melaporkan telah menemukan jejak-jejak batuan Toba di Samudra Hindia dan Teluk Benggala. Para peneliti awal, Van Bemmelen juga Aldiss dan Ghazali (1984) telah menduga Toba tercipta lewat sebuah letusan mahadahsyat. Namun peneliti lain, Vestappen (1961), Yokoyama dan Hehanusa (1981), serta Nishimura (1984), menduga kaldera itu tercipta lewat beberapa kali letusan. Peneliti lebih baru, Knight dan sejawatnya (1986) serta Chesner dan Rose (1991), memberikan perkiraan lebih detail: kaldera Toba tercipta lewat tiga letusan raksasa.</p>
<p>Penelitian seputar Toba belum berakhir hingga kini. Jadi, masih banyak misteri di balik raksasa yang sedang tidur itu. Salah satu peneliti Toba angkatan terbaru itu adalah Fauzi dari Indonesia, seismolog pada Badan Meteorologi dan Geofisika. Sarjana fisika dari Universitas Indonesia lulusan 1985 ini berhasil meraih gelar doktor dari Renssealer Polytechnic Institute, New York, pada 1998, untuk penelitiannya mengenai Toba.<br />
 Berada di tiga lempeng tektonik</p>
<p>Letak Gunung Toba (kini: Danau Toba), di Indonesia memang rawan bencana. Hal ini terkait dengan posisi Indonesia yang terletak di pertemuan tiga lempeng tektonik, yakni Eurasia, Indo-Australia dan Lempeng Pasifik. Sebanyak 80% dari wilayah Indonesia, terletak di lempeng Eurasia, yang meliputi Sumatera, Jawa, Kalimantan, Sulawesi dan Banda.</p>
<p>Lempeng benua ini hidup, setiap tahunnya mereka bergeser atau menumbuk lempeng lainnya dengan jarak tertentu. Lempeng Eurasia yang merupakan lempeng benua selalu jadi sasaran. Lempeng Indo-Australia misalnya menumbuk lempeng Eurasia sejauh 7 cm per tahun. Atau Lempeng Pasifik yang bergeser secara relatif terhadap lempeng Eurasia sejauh 11 cm per tahun. Dari pergeseran itu, muncullah rangkaian gunung, termasuk gunung berapi Toba.</p>
<p>Jika ada tumbukan, lempeng lautan yang mengandung lapisan sedimen menyusup di bawahnya lempeng benua. Proses ini lantas dinamakan subduksi atau penyusupan.</p>
<p>Gunung hasil subduksi, salah satunya Gunung Toba. Meski sekarang tak lagi berbentuk gunung, sisa-sisa kedasahyatan letusannya masih tampak hingga saat ini. Danau Toba merupakan kaldera yang terbentuk akibat meletusnya Gunung Toba sekitar tiga kali yang pertama 840 juta tahun lalu dan yang terakhir 74.000 tahun lalu. Bagian yang terlempar akibat letusan itu mencapai luas 100 km x 30 km persegi. Daerah yang tersisa kemudian membentuk kaldera. Di tengahnya kemudian muncul Pulau Samosir.<br />
Letusan</p>
<p>Sebelumnya Gunung Toba pernah meletus tiga kali.</p>
<p>    * Letusan pertama terjadi sekitar 840 juta tahun lalu. Letusan ini menghasilkan kaldera di selatan Danau Toba, meliputi daerah Prapat dan Porsea.<br />
    * Letusan kedua yang memiliki kekuatan lebih kecil, terjadi 500 juta tahun lalu. Letusan ini membentuk kaldera di utara Danau Toba. Tepatnya di daerah antara Silalahi dengan Haranggaol. Dari dua letusan ini, letusan ketigalah yang paling dashyat.<br />
    * Letusan ketiga 74.000 tahun lalu menghasilkan kaldera, dan menjadi Danau Toba sekarang dengan Pulau Samosir di tengahnya.</p>
<p>Gunung Toba ini tergolong Supervolcano. Hal ini dikarenakan Gunung Toba memiliki kantong magma yang besar yang jika meletus kalderanya besar sekali. Volcano kalderanya ratusan meter, sedangkan Supervolacano itu puluhan kilometer.</p>
<p>Yang menarik adalah terjadinya anomali gravitasi di Toba. Menurut hukum gravitasi, antara satu tempat dengan lainnya akan memiliki gaya tarik bumi sama bila mempunyai massa, ketinggian dan kerelatifan yang sama. Jika ada materi yang lain berada di situ dengan massa berbeda, maka gaya tariknya berbeda. Bayangkan gunung meletus. Banyak materi yang keluar, artinya kehilangan massa dan gaya tariknya berkurang. Lalu yang terjadi up-lifting (pengangkatan). Inilah yang menyebabkan munculnya Pulau Samosir.</p>
<p>Magma yang di bawah itu terus mendesak ke atas, pelan-pelan. Dia sudah tidak punya daya untuk meletus. Gerakan ini berusaha untuk menyesuaikan ke normal gravitasi. Ini terjadi dalam kurun waktu ribuan tahun. Hanya Samosir yang terangkat karena daerah itu yang terlemah. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Daerah yang diperkirakan terkena abu letusan Tambora tahun 1815. Daerah merah menunjukan ketebalan abu vulkanik. Abu tersebut mencapai pulau Kalimantan dan Sulawesi (ketebalan 1 cm).</p>
<p>Gunung Tambora mengalami ketidakaktifan selama beberapa abad sebelum tahun 1815, dikenal dengan nama gunung berapi &#8220;tidur&#8221;, yang merupakan hasil dari pendinginan hydrous magma di dalam dapur magma yang tertutup. Didalam dapur magma dalam kedalaman sekitar 1,5-4,5 km, larutan padat dari cairan magma bertekanan tinggi terbentuk pada saat pendinginan dan kristalisasi magma. Tekanan di kamar makma sekitar 4-5 kbar muncul dan temperatur sebesar 700 °C-850 °C.</p>
<p>Pada tahun 1812, kaldera gunung Tambora mulai bergemuruh dan menghasilkan awan hitam. Pada tanggal 5 April 1815, erupsi terjadi, diikuti dengan suara guruh yang terdengar di Makassar, Sulawesi (380 km dari gunung Tambora), Batavia (kini Jakarta) di pulau Jawa (1.260 km dari gunung Tambora), dan Ternate di Maluku (1400 km dari gunung Tambora). Suara guruh ini terdengar sampai ke pulau Sumatera pada tanggal 10-11 April 1815 (lebih dari 2.600 km dari gunung Tambora) yang awalnya dianggap sebagai suara tembakan senapan. Pada pagi hari tanggal 6 April 1815, abu vulkanik mulai jatuh di Jawa Timur dengan suara guruh terdengar sampai tanggal 10 April 1815.</p>
<p>Pada pukul 7:00 malam tanggal 10 April, letusan gunung ini semakin kuat. Tiga lajur api terpancar dan bergabung. Seluruh pegunungan berubah menjadi aliran besar api. Batuan apung dengan diameter 20 cm mulai menghujani pada pukul 8:00 malam, diikuti dengan abu pada pukul 9:00-10:00 malam. Aliran piroklastik panas mengalir turun menuju laut di seluruh sisi semenanjung, memusnahkan desa Tambora. Ledakan besar terdengar sampai sore tanggal 11 April. Abu menyebar sampai Jawa Barat dan Sulawesi Selatan. Bau &#8220;nitrat&#8221; tercium di Batavia dan hujan besar yang disertai dengan abu tefrit jatuh, akhirnya reda antara tangal 11 dan 17 April 1815.</p>
<p>Letusan pertama terdengar di pulau ini pada sore hari tanggal 5 April, mereka menyadarinya setiap seperempat jam, dan terus berlanjut dengan jarak waktu sampai hari selanjutnya. Suaranya, pada contoh pertama, hampir dianggap suara meriam; sangat banyak sehingga sebuah detasemen tentara bergerak dari Djocjocarta, dengan perkiraan bahwa pos terdekat diserang, dan sepanjang pesisir, perahu-perahu dikirimkan pada dua kesempatan dalam pencarian sebuah kapal yang semestinya berada dalam keadaan darurat.</p>
<p>Letusan tersebut masuk dalam skala tujuh pada skala Volcanic Explosivity Index. Letusan ini empat kali lebih kuat daripada letusan gunung Krakatau tahun 1883. Diperkirakan 100 km³ piroklastik trakiandesit dikeluarkan, dengan perkiraan massa 1,4×1014 kg. Hal ini meninggalkan kaldera dengan ukuran 6-7 km dan kedalaman 600-700 m. Massa jenis abu yang jatuh di Makassar sebesar 636 kg/m². Sebelum letusan, gunung Tambora memiliki ketinggian kira-kira 4.300 m, salah satu puncak tertinggi di Indonesia. Setelah letusan, tinggi gunung ini hanya setinggi 2.851 m.</p>
<p>Letusan Tambora tahun 1815 adalah letusan terbesar di sejarah. Letusan gunung ini terdengar sejauh 2.600 km, dan abu jatuh setidaknya sejauh 1.300 km. Kegelapan terlihat sejauh 600 km dari puncak gunung selama lebih dari dua hari. Aliran piroklastik menyebar setidaknya 20 km dari puncak. (sumber wikipedia)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="abstract">OBJECTIVE: We tested the relative importance of a low-glycemic response versus a high glycemic response breakfast meal on postprandial serum glucose, insulin and free fatty acid (FFA) responses after consumption of a standardized mid-day meal in adult individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). DESIGN: Following an overnight fast of 8-10 h, a randomized crossover intervention using control and test meals was conducted over a 3-week-period. A fasting baseline measurement and postprandial measurements at various time intervals after the breakfast and mid-day meal were taken. SUBJECTS: Forty-five Type 2 DM subjects completed the requirements and were included in the study results. INTERVENTIONS: Two different breakfast meals were administered during the intervention: (A) a high glycemic load breakfast meal consisting of farina (kJ 1833; carbohydrate (CHO) 78 g and psylium soluble fiber 0 g), (B) a low-glycemic load breakfast meal consisting of a fiber-loop cereal (kJ 1515; CHO 62 g and psyllium soluble fiber 6.6 g). A standardized lunch was provided approximately 4 h after breakfast. Blood plasma concentrations and area under the curve (AUC) values for glucose, insulin and FFA were measured in response to the breakfast and mid-day lunch. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS software (8.02). Comparisons between diets were based on adjusted Bonferroni t-tests. RESULTS: In post-breakfast analyses, Breakfast B had significantly lower area under the curve (AUC) values for plasma glucose and insulin compared to Breakfast A (P&lt;0.05) (95% confidence level). The AUC values for FFA were higher for Breakfast B than for Breakfast A (P&lt;0.05) (95% confidence level). Post-lunch analyses indicated similar glucose responses for the two breakfast types. Insulin AUC values for Breakfasts B were significantly lower than Breakfast A (P&lt;0.05) (95% confidence level). The AUC values for FFA were unaffected by breakfast type. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that ingesting a low-glycemic load meal containing psyllium soluble fiber at breakfast significantly improves the breakfast postprandial glycemic, insulinemic and FFA responses in adults with Type 2 DM. These data revealed no residual postprandial effect of the psyllium soluble fiber breakfast meal beyond the second meal consumed. Thus, there was no evidence of an improvement postprandially in the glycemic, insulinemic and FFA responses after the consumption of the lunch meal. Published online 3 May 2006.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Plantago ovata has been reported to reduce postprandial glucose concentrations in diabetic patients. In the present study, the efficacy and possible modes of action of hot-water extracts of husk of P. ovata were evaluated. The administration of P. ovata (0.5 g/kg body weight) significantly improved glucose tolerance in normal, type 1 and type 2 diabetic rat models. When the extract was administered orally with sucrose solution, it suppressed postprandial blood glucose and retarded small intestinal absorption without inducing the influx of sucrose into the large intestine. The extract significantly reduced glucose absorption in the gut during in situ perfusion of small intestine in non-diabetic rats. In 28 d chronic feeding studies in type 2 diabetic rat models, the extract reduced serum atherogenic lipids and NEFA but had no effect on plasma insulin and total antioxidant status. No effect of the extract was evident on intestinal disaccharidase activity. Furthermore, the extract did not stimulate insulin secretion in perfused rat pancreas, isolated rat islets or clonal beta cells. Neither did the extract affect glucose transport in 3T3 adipocytes. In conclusion, aqueous extracts of P. ovata reduce hyperglycaemia in diabetes via inhibition of intestinal glucose absorption and enhancement of motility. These attributes indicate that P. ovata may be a useful source of active components to provide new opportunities for diabetes therapy.</p>
